Open Back vs Solid Back
Most gold rings come in two varieties, open back and solid back. Open back means that the space behind the face of the ring is hollow. This makes the ring cheaper by using less precious metal. Solid back means that the ring is solid behind the face. You may also see other designations such as partial back, hollow back and concave back which are all variations of open back. Most rings that are open backed are marked as such but if you are not sure, just ask.
